You know the pattern. A track grabs you, so you play it again. Then again. Then twenty times in a week, until you can hear the intake of breath before the chorus. And eventually a small voice asks: is this normal, or am I wearing out the song I love most?
Good news. Playing something on repeat is not a flaw in the way you listen. It is how music works in the first place.
The repetition is already inside the song
Long before you hit replay, music repeats itself. In a cross-cultural study discussed in the work of music cognition researcher Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis, David Huron and Joy Ollen estimated that roughly 94% of musical passages are literally restated later in the same piece — a finding relayed in the Music Theory Online review of her book On Repeat.
Verses, choruses, drum loops, a four-note motif that returns every eight bars: the architecture of a song is an exercise in coming back. Putting a track on repeat simply adds a floor to a building that was already constructed out of repetition. You are not misusing the object. You are following its logic one step further.
What your brain gains from knowing what comes next
The obvious objection: if I already know everything that is going to happen, where is the pleasure? Exactly there.
A study led by Valorie Salimpoor and Robert Zatorre at McGill University, published in Nature Neuroscience, combined positron emission tomography with functional MRI while participants listened to music that gave them chills. The finding: the brain releases dopamine at two separate moments, in two separate regions. The caudate nucleus fires during the anticipation of the passage you are waiting for; other striatal regions fire at the emotional peak itself.
The implication is counterintuitive and freeing. Part of musical pleasure comes not from the moment itself but from the second before it — from knowing what is coming and feeling your brain lean into it. That pleasure is unavailable on a first listen. You have to know the song to feel it. Repetition does not dilute the experience. It unlocks a layer of it.
How far does familiarity keep improving a song?
Which leaves the question everyone actually wants answered: after how many plays does the magic break?
Here the common wisdom runs well ahead of the evidence. Everyone says an overplayed track eventually goes flat — personal experience backs it up, and the idea of pleasure that rises and then falls is widely accepted. But when you go looking for the number, there isn't one.
The most precise experiment on the question, run by Green and colleagues and published in Neurology Research International, exposed listeners to melodies 0, 2, 8, or 32 times. Liking did rise with exposure: melodies heard 32 times were significantly preferred over melodies never heard. But liking never came back down. It only slowed: between 8 and 32 plays, the difference was borderline (p = 0.051).
In other words, across 32 laboratory plays, the wearing-out effect does not show up. It plateaus. That does not prove it never happens — only that the much-cited "saturation point" circulates without a solid figure behind it. If you are wondering whether you have played a track "too much," no study will hand you the number. Your own waning interest remains the only instrument available.
Repeat a sound and it starts to sound musical
There is an even more striking demonstration of what looping does. Rhimmon Simchy-Gross and Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis played participants environmental sounds — not music, ordinary noise — repeated ten times in a row. Their study in Music & Science shows perception shifting: the musicality attributed to those sounds climbed from 1.84 to 2.45 on a five-point scale (p < .0001).
The telling detail is that the effect held even when the clips were scrambled and reassembled out of order. So it is not melodic recognition doing the work. It is repetition itself. It pulls attention away from what a sound means and toward what it is made of — its timbre, its grain, its rhythm.
That mechanism explains a familiar experience. By the thirtieth play, you are no longer hearing the lyrics the same way. You hear a bass line you had never noticed, a breath, a flaw in the mix. The track has not changed. Your listening has moved.
The loop as a regulation tool
One dimension the numbers capture poorly: nobody loops just any song, at just any moment.
A longitudinal study by Bernhard Leipold and colleagues, published in Musicae Scientiae, followed 262 adults aged 30 to 80 across three waves roughly a year apart. It found that using music to regulate emotion is linked to perceived stress levels and to active, problem-focused coping. Music is not just background: it is a lever people pull, often without naming it.
A more surprising result comes from Liila Taruffi and Stefan Koelsch's survey in PLOS ONE, conducted with 772 participants. Asked what sad music makes them feel, people name sadness itself only 44.9% of the time. The most frequent answer is nostalgia, at 76%. The authors identify four reported rewards: the absence of real-life consequences, emotion regulation, empathy, and imagination.
So the song you looped through a hard evening is not a symptom. It is more likely a tool — a predictable emotional space, where you know exactly what happens next, at a moment when nothing else does.
What your listening history can tell you
Your loops leave traces, and those traces are more readable than most people expect. On May 12, 2026, for its twentieth anniversary, Spotify opened up a recap of users' entire listening history: first track ever streamed, favourite artist, and above all a list of the 120 most-played songs with a play count attached to each. Plenty of people discovered a gap they had not suspected between the song they name as their favourite and the one they actually play.
That is where the data gets interesting — not as a score, but as a mirror. A raw play count says very little. Cross it with time of day, season, or a stretch of heavy weeks, and it says something else entirely: when you go looking for predictability, and what you loop to get it. Is it something to worry about?
In the overwhelming majority of cases, no. Repetition is the normal mode of music consumption, and none of the studies cited here treat it as a problem.
Two simple markers, though:
- A loop that soothes and a loop that traps do not look alike. If a track helps you get through an evening, it is doing its job. If it reliably returns you to the same painful memory and nothing shifts, the thing to look at is the context, not the playlist.
- Do not go hunting for the right number of plays. It does not exist in the literature. The only reliable signal is your own enjoyment: the day a song leaves you cold, you will know before any counter does.
