In 2004, a German team led by Gunter Kreutz followed members of an amateur choir across two sessions: one in which they sang, and one in which they merely listened to choral music. Saliva samples were taken before and again sixty minutes later. Published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine, the study found that singing increased positive emotions and levels of secretory immunoglobulin A — a first-line antibody of the mucous membranes — while reducing negative emotions. Simply listening did not produce the same immune effect.

A British study from 2016, led by Daisy Fancourt and published in ecancermedicalscience, went further. Studying 193 members of five choirs made up of people affected by cancer — patients, carers, and bereaved carers — the researchers observed that a single hour of singing was accompanied by a drop in cortisol, the stress hormone, and a rise in certain cytokines tied to immune defense, alongside an improvement in mood.

A word of caution is in order: these are acute effects, measured just after a session, in relatively small groups. This work does not prove that singing cures anything. A study by Eiluned Pearce, Jacques Launay, and Robin Dunbar, published in 2015 in Royal Society Open Science, followed adults enrolled in evening classes over seven months: singing, crafts, or creative writing. The singing groups bonded faster than the others — the researchers named this the "ice-breaker effect."

The hypothesis: singing lets a whole group connect at once, where a conversation only links two people at a time. And social connection is one of the best-established predictors of better health and greater longevity.
